I am based in the beautiful South Wales countryside and am lucky enough to be close to nature every day. I have also spent most of my life in the company of much-loved pets including cats, fish, a hamster and my cheeky and loving Labrador, Arian. This is why I get so much enjoyment from creating pieces of art that help people capture special pets or evoke memories of wildlife encounters.

When working at home I am usually assisted by Arian. She also makes me take a break and get close to nature whatever the weather with a walk in the countryside, an amble up a hill or a stroll along the canal. Every time she stops to sniff (normally every few paces!) I can pause to take in my surroundings or snap a quick photo.

Working as an artist I enjoy the gradual process of bringing an animal to life. Whether it’s the funny expression on the face of a dog, the alertness of a hare in a meadow or the hard stare of a bird of prey. Every picture is different which makes the drawing process interesting and exciting but also a challenge.

Starting a picture is the hardest part so I am always pleased when I have completed the pencil drawing, at this point I already have a good likeness and I can picture the finished work in my mind. I then have to keep the faith as I get through the ‘ugly’ stage where you begin to put layers of coloured pencil on the paper and the likeness you initially had seems to get further away. Gradually the likeness emerges again but in beautiful colour, this is my favourite part of the drawing process. The final touches can really make a drawing but it is also important to know when to stop! I will usually finish a picture and then come back to it a day later just to check I am completely happy with it. After any final touches I can declare it finished and treat myself to a glass of wine or some chocolate to celebrate!
